Genesis Health Clubs, Wichita’s largest private health club, has announced the purchase of a 95,000 sq.-ft. shopping center in Salina, future home to a 60,000 sq. ft. health club and tennis facility.
Twenty-five thousand square feet will be added to the center, which will continue to be home to Big Lots and Harbor Freight, to accommodate the 5-court tennis facility. The health club will become Genesis Health Club’s second location outside Wichita, serving Salina residents and will be a great addition to the Salina community.
The upscale club will be luxuriously appointed with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Among the features are: three Group Fitness Studios; two Racquetball Courts; a Pilates/Yoga Studio; a High-Tech Cardio Floor with plasma video monitors/DVD players on each machine; Comprehensive Strength and Training Area; Stretching Areas and a Cycling Studio. The five tennis courts will be accompanied by a tennis viewing ‘Grand Slam’ room similar to Genesis’ Rock Road location in Wichita.
GENESIS HEALTH CLUBS BRINGS INDOOR TENNIS TO WEST WICHITA
A tennis addition is currently underway at Genesis Health Clubs’ West Central location on 854 N. Socora. The future facility will house 5 indoor climate-controlled tennis courts and the expansion will also include an added group fitness studio and ‘Grand Slam’ tennis viewing area.
Simon Norman, Genesis Rock Road Tennis Director, is proud to announce that Jack Oxler was awarded the position of Director of Tennis at the new location. Oxler has a variety of experience both as a player and USPTA certified coach as well as background in managing a tennis facility. In 2009, he formed the Winter Junior Team Tennis League. This team competition between facilities in Wichita and Hutchinson has had tremendous success with 150 junior tennis players competing. Oxler has also coached successfully at both the high school and college levels.
Norman and Oxler have a passion for growing junior tennis players and have seen several of their players go on to get college scholarships and others learn a lifelong sport.
Along with Junior Tennis programs, Genesis will be offering men’s and women’s leagues, clinics, private lessons and many tennis social events when the addition is complete. The tennis addition is scheduled to be complete in early March, 2010. Other improvements in progress at the club will be finished 30-60 days after the tennis addition opens.

A series of tennis lesson clinics for kids started with 62 sign-ups in the first of four weeks scheduled in June and July. Genesis teaching professionals and staff, led by pro James Komokech taught tennis basics to youngsters ranging in age 6 to 15 for several hours per day. The opening week of play featured learning stroke and game fundamentals for kids, who for the first time held a racquet and played on an indoor court.
GFFT has the expectation to reach as many as 250 or more kids from the neighborhood and local community by mid-summer. The charitable organization encourages families to become active in tennis as well as being involved in other improved health and fitness programs.
Our Burgers and Beer 09 event was held close to downtown on Seneca street. This year we had a band along with moonwalks, burgers and beer (of coarse!) and a great view of the fireworks!
